The most recent example of this that I can think of is the recent bexar county’s introduction of an e-learning course in their library. As with other new technology, e-learning is often more expensive than traditional education. There are many factors that contribute to the higher cost of e-learning, but the main thing is that it is a significant cost to the classroom teacher.
With that said, I think the biggest reason why e-learning is expensive is that most of the information available is either outdated or not available in the language the student is learning. I believe this is the main reason why many teachers struggle to teach new material. They could have it in English, but it would be more expensive to change the curriculum than to just provide students with the new material.
I say this because I’ve seen other e-learning systems that have been more expensive than the ones we use at our school and I’ve also seen the most expensive e-learning platform currently out there: Khan Academy. So I asked our School Counselor, Dr. Susan Ruggiero, whether she thought the cost of our new technology was worth it for our students and she thought the answer was yes.
It’s clear that at a school with an average of 200 students, each of them is the center of a system of interconnections and exchanges. The more the students interact with technology, the better they’ll all be.
The system we’ve created here at our school has been a great benefit for our students. It has allowed us to cut costs and introduce residents to e-technology in a way that is more convenient and more efficient than the alternatives. We have reduced our staff (the teachers) to less than one person and instead of a computer lab we have a “smart classroom” where the students have a lot of computer-related activity going on around them.
Being that the students interact with technology, they also interact with the computers they use in class. That’s because when the students are at school they get access to the school’s computer systems. That means they can check e-mail, surf the web, and just as importantly, use school computers to check their grades.
So in the new classroom, teachers and students interact with computers. The main difference in the new class is that students do not have to use a teacher as a resource. Instead the schools computers are used for everything including grading.
The reason the computer in the classroom has a teacher as a resource is because the teacher is used to a different system. When I was in high school I worked with a teacher who created a software program called E-Prime. This program allowed the teacher to use the computers as a resource and had an interface that was similar to a traditional calculator or spreadsheet.
The teacher was also able to use his own computer as a resource to give feedback. So when the student was using the computer to do homework, the teacher could give him a piece of advice or an error correction. He would also help the student with his homework and then when the student got it right, he would allow the student to go back to the teacher and get the rest of the homework.
It’s amazing how this all fits together. The ability for teachers to use their own computers as a resource to give feedback as well as to help students with their homework shows that the school district did a ton of work here to keep teachers using their own computers to help students with their homework. At the same time, it’s also important to note that the school district did not have any actual computers in the classroom.
