What we are being sold is a world where the latest tech can make or break an entire industry.
Yes, you read that right. Tech is being sold as the only thing that has the power to change how we live and work. But the technology in question is a commodity. It’s not even a business like a bank or an insurance company. It’s a tool, and it’s being sold to the consumer as that tool.
Companies that talk about the latest and greatest new technology are often marketing it as the “next” or “next big thing.” But in the real world, a new technology is a step into the future, but not necessarily a step forward for the consumer. For example, a car company might talk about making the new car the next “car” but they could have easily been talking about a car that no longer makes or needs a driver.
This is something that I am constantly reminded of. I recently saw an ad from a company that I had never heard of called Dyson. The ad was for a robotic vacuum cleaner and stated that the vacuum cleaner was a “revolutionary innovation” that would revolutionize the cleaning industry. I didn’t know anything about the company or the product in question, but I was able to look it up online. The vacuum cleaner was indeed a revolutionary innovation.
Dyson has a history of designing robotic vacuum cleaners that will replace our current ones. Of course, this is not the Dyson that will be powering a car. That’s the technology that will be powering the robotic vacuum cleaners that will replace our cars. We will soon be the only ones left that still need a driver.
Dyson’s latest creation is the Dyson Sonic V10. Its main selling point is the sonic-like cleaner that can clean all corners of your home. This robotic vacuum cleaner is just as expensive as the Dyson that will be coming out later this year.
